Compare Contractor Estimates for Your Metro East Project

Two estimates can describe very different jobs even when their totals look similar. Use this checklist to compare a kitchen, bathroom, deck, landscaping or repair proposal before committing. It does not set prices or replace a project-specific agreement.

Start with the same project description

Give each provider the same photos, approximate dimensions and requested changes. Identify items you want to keep, desired materials and access constraints. Separate essential work from optional improvements so you can compare equivalent scope.

Ask for these details in writing

Questions that depend on the project

Kitchen and bathroom remodeling

Does the proposal preserve the layout or relocate fixtures? Are plumbing, electrical, surface preparation, waterproofing where needed and finish repairs included? Ask which conditions need inspection before scope is firm.

Landscaping and outdoor work

Check planting quantities and sizes, removal of existing material, soil preparation, access, disposal and drainage-related work. Ask what care responsibilities remain with you. An inspiration photo is not a promised result.

Decks, fencing and repairs

Identify exactly which sections are repaired or replaced. Ask about posts, connections, stairs, railings, gates, finishing and disposal where relevant. Photos alone cannot establish structural safety.

Verify the business, not just the photos

Ask for relevant qualification and insurance information, applicable licensing, a written agreement and genuine examples of comparable work. Confirm permission before contacting references. A directory listing or stock image is not independent proof of workmanship.

When one estimate is much lower

Ask what differs. It may reflect a smaller scope, different materials, allowances or exclusions. Clarify those differences before deciding.
